A flexible two-day itinerary
Two days in Bologna
The historic centre, canals, green spaces and local food, without rushing.
A weekend does not need to become a checklist. Spend the first day getting to know the centre and the second choosing a side of Bologna that suits your interests. Keep the schedule flexible for weather, arrival time and the pleasure of pausing.
Day one: squares, shops and Santo Stefano.
Piazza Maggiore · Quadrilatero · Santo Stefano
Begin with Piazza Maggiore and Neptune, then enter the Quadrilatero. Palaces and shops are close enough to combine sightseeing and lunch without crossing the whole city. Choose one interior visit, such as the Archiginnasio or a museum, after checking access.
Continue towards Santo Stefano in the afternoon with a break on the way. For dinner, explore our food guide and the 051 venues’ official menus. If you arrive late, keep the first day to a square, a walk and dinner rather than trying to catch up at once.
Day two: canals, university life or greenery.
Via Piella · Via Zamboni · Giardini Margherita
Spend the morning around Via Piella and the former ghetto, then choose whether to continue towards Via Zamboni. For a greener alternative, plan Giardini Margherita or the Botanical Garden.
San Luca deserves a more relaxed plan, especially on foot. Treat it as an alternative rather than adding it to every other stop. Leave time to collect luggage and reach the station or airport before departure.
If it rains, or you want a quieter pace.
Musei Civici · Portici · Centro storico
Replace an outdoor stretch with Salaborsa, a museum or a Cineteca film. Consider MAMbo for contemporary art and check cinema programmes for an evening. Photographs help you choose an atmosphere; official websites confirm the arrangements.
Avoid trying every museum at once. One thoughtful experience and a comfortable pause make a more personal stay. Porticoes connect some stops, but a route may not be entirely sheltered. With extra days, spread these ideas over a slower visit.
